Package with Care!

  • It would be awesome if whoever does the packaging for shipments to go out actually put some care into it. Over the last several weeks we have had damaged items. It seems as if whoever packages the items just "throws" them into the box. I had a box of markers crushed because a dozen legal pads were laying on top of them. And I also received a calendar in a box by itself that was 10 times the necessary size. Lay items in the box neatly and maybe even use bubble wrap or fillers if need be. Box size is usually not accurate for what is in the box. The box usually has a lot of space, with hardly any packing material included. Most of my items do not come damaged, but the box is usually too big for what's in it. It costs FedEx/UPS more to ship bigger boxes with not much in it.

This thead of comments makes me think I will NEVER order from Quill because the shipping problems have bee going on for over 3 years. Get off you lasy rump and allow the employees a few extra seconds per box so the items are packed right! And they need to be trained to use COMMON sense when packing, use the correct sized box (ORDER smaller boxes), heavy items on the bottom OR just send in a separate smaller box the lighter items that the heavier items could and do damage!

Even when a lighter item is placed at the top of the box, it can get crushed because the delivery person places the box upside down. Maybe you need to print This Side Up on all your boxes.

Three years later and this still seems to be an ongoing problem!  That has been my only complaint with ordering is that things are packed so badly.

Several times we order creamer&sugar one or two are busted. Plus when we order pens&markers they also are everywhere in the shipping box. I can tell its not UPS's fault the box outside is not damaged.

The shipping boxes are getting better.  The products are coming in smaller boxes that are more suited to what is being shipped.  The bubble filler usually is partially deflated when the boxes arrive.  There are still problems with liquid sprays just being sent in plastic bags along with products that might be damaged if the liquid leaks.

I agree. You do a fabulous getting the products to us, usually the next day!

But the boxes come to us in pretty bad shape and supplies do come out of their containers. When I buy paper by the case, the boxes are usually damaged and the reams split open. Fortunately, the humidity level in our office is ok, or our paper would not go well through the copy machine.

I'm sure will find a solution as you are the best in customer satisfaction!!

I recently purchased 50 of the Quill Prong style pressboard covers (item 740404) and I received five enormous boxes with 10 folders each and stuff with the plastic air pillows.  All 50 fit in one box with room to spare.  Why ship them separately, loose, and in such a large box?  It was ridiculous.  At another time I ordered bags of coffee along with other office supplies.  One box had coffee and sharp objects.  Needless to say, the entire one lb bag of coffee was lost, the postal carrier had coffee grounds all over.  I never bought coffee from Quill again.  Shipping and handling department needs to be retrained!

Things need to be packaged with care.  Alot of times one heavy item is flying around the box and damages other items.

This has been a massive problem for me. Nothing worse than ordering 10 dozen pens to find they were thrown in the bottom of a box with much heavier items (reams of paper) on top. Then you open the box and the pens are everywhere, the boxes they came in are destroyed, and often there's a broken pen that leaked ink all over everything else. It really does seem like the warehouse people just throw everything in a box with as little care as possible. The oversized boxes are absurd as well. And the one that really drives me nuts: When I order a case of ledger paper (5 reams) and it doesn't come in a normal paper box like any other case of paper. I get 3 reams in one gigantic flimsy box, 2 in another, and the boxes are way too big. So when the paper arrives, the reams are torn and the covering is shredded. Usually half the paper is unusable. I've started using Quill less because I'm tired of getting destroyed items.

And I thought I was the only one down here in Florida with this issue.  I was told it was those "Florida" warehouse people doing this.  My comment to that is, "Florida" warehouse, NC Warehouse, California, Alaska... all the same QUILL employees no matter what location they are. Train these people better, please.  I've had more damaged merchandise than not.

We have had the same experience lately.  HUGE boxes with a few items and it seems like they were just tossed in he box without care.  Items just rolling around in the box resulting in dented boxes and packaging.

I agree! I have lost count of how many times I have made do with slightly damaged products because it is such a hassle to send back and reorder when we need the product now.

I have given up on ordering binders. 9 out of 10 times they come squished to that the rings are bent beyond repair. Decided to give them another shot since I didn't have time to run to the store and I was already ordering hundreds of dollars of other items at the same time. I ordered 5 for a high priority project. All 5 came completely unusable.

I also get giant boxes in my tiny lobby that hold just a couple of tiny things. The items end up battered and I have to immediately deal with the shipment because people can't move in the lobby with the giant box in the way.

I refuse to order anything powder or liquid through Quill.  The last three shipments had coffee or janitorial supplies that ended up all over the other office supplies in the box.  I'm not saying it's Quill's fault as I'm sure UPS has some sketchy package handling practices as well.  But when I open up a taped over box and I see packaging pillows in the box that weren't even inflated, there's an issue.  If you're shipping fragile material, it needs to be securely packaged.  Putting it in a plastic bag doesn't solve the issue.

I've only had damage to a shipment once - but I have had large boxes sent with just a few small items and extra packing material to take up the extra space. Not sure if you run out of size appropriate boxes or someone just didn't want to make an effort?

Copy paper comes the boxes totaled and the paper wrapping  tore, aslo had the toner boxes smashed.

I agree!  Seems like the packaging department needs to take lessons from some bag boys...don't put the jar of pickles on top of the bread and eggs!  It's common sense when packaging our items...

I agree with all of the comments on making an improvement to the way quill ships their products.  There does not seem to be a happy medium to the packing procedures.  Either the products come in a box way to big with so much packing material, which just seems so wasteful.  Or, the products are all thrown together in a box with little or not packing material and then they are damaged when we receive them.  I just received an order today that came with everything in one box, no packing material and everything was different weights.  Half of the order was crushed, yet not bad enough to send back and wait for a new one to arrive.  If you could ship smaller items in smaller boxes and if you pack multiple items together, go by weight and use packing material.

I agree Many times we have received our shipments where the pens have all come out of the box due to the way it was packed to ship. today we received a large order that had the air packs in it but they didn't amount to anything as the box was slightly damaged due to being oversized for what we got without enough air packs

We've also noticed that the shipping boxes don't seem to be of appropriate size. Our laser toner cartridges used to come in slightly larger boxes with packing pillows but more recently come in a box that isn't quite large enough for the toner cartridge box to fit inside it. It would seem that your shipping dept. would have boxes that fit the toner cartridge boxes since I'm sure you ship a lot of toner cartridges.

We get items from time to time that are crushed in the boxes, or we have to send back cause they were damaged. It makes it hard to place an order instead of just running to the store cause you know what the item will be like when we get back from a store.

Score points just by participating. The more you participate the more points you earn.  You can earn them by submitting, commenting and voting on ideas.  Submitting an idea is worth the most points with commenting second and voting third.

When you reach certain point levels, we will recognize you with a ribbon that will be proudly displayed next to your user name.  You can earn multiple ribbons, and top users will be awarded a virtual trophy.

What happens after I submit an idea?

All ideas will be reviewed. However, all ideas may not enter the status cycle.

Our status levels are as follows: Revise and include the appropriate status icon next to each status

New: All submitted ideas will start at this level. No status designation is assigned.

Under Review: User-added image Any idea that has been submitted to the category owner for a more detailed review.

Reviewed: User-added image The review process has been completed.  Pending next steps.

Closed: User-added image Any idea that has been reviewed and determined it will not move forward

Coming Soon: User-added image Any idea that is put in the process of implementation

Launched: User-added image The idea has been implemented.

Will my identity be anonymous on the site? 

When you register to use the site, you will create a screen name and that will be your name when you post ideas and comments. For added privacy, you will want to pick a unique screen name rather than using your real name. Remember the ideas you post will be seen by any visitor. Read our Privacy Policy to learn how your Quill Ideas account information is handled.

Will my personal information be easily accessed by others?

No. All postings are anonymous and you are only identified by the unique screen name that you have created. Other users will never be able to contact you directly. In certain circumstances, the site moderator may need to contact you through the e-mail address that you provided during account setup. 

How are ideas selected for execution?

Online votes and comments are used to help get ideas developed. Ideas that receive the most votes have a higher chance of being considered. Also, an idea may be selected because it appears to have a potential for success.

How do voting and comments work? 

As a registered user, you can vote on every idea once.  A voting icon is shown next to the idea. Just click to vote on your favorites. It’s that simple.  Each vote is worth 10 points.  A vote up will add ten points and a vote down will take away 10 points.  The idea’s score can be found beneath the voting icons. The higher the points the more popular the idea is.

Read and make comments on a specific idea by clicking on an idea title.  Comment on ideas as many times as you like. There is no limit.  Comments do not earn an idea points. 

Our site moderators will leave comments as well.  These users are identified with a User-added image icon.

Does every idea get a response?

Due to the amount of posts, we won’t be able to respond to every posting. If your idea is moved to the formal review step, you can expect to receive e-mail updates from us.  We will keep you informed if your idea is recommended for implementation and notify you of any status changes. 

Do I get recognized if my idea is selected?

If your idea is implemented, we may give you credit on the site, but there is no monetary compensation. Take a look at our Terms and Conditions to learn more.

Is there a moderator on Quill Ideas?

Your ideas and comments are not reviewed before they are posted.  Any postings that violate the Terms of Use will be removed. When appropriate, we will respond to comments in a timely manner. Profanity will not be tolerated. A filter for profanity is in use. Ideas or comments that include profanity will be blocked from posting until the profanity is deleted. (viii) If we determine that you have violated these Terms of use, you may be barred from accessing the Site, and we may pursue any remedies available to us.

3. License of Your Submission; Option to Purchase. 
(a) You grant to Quill.com and its designees a perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive fully-paid up and royalty-free license to use any ideas, expression of ideas or other information, content or materials in your Submission (collectively, “Materials”) without restrictions of any kind and without any payment or other consideration of any kind, or permission or notification, to you or any third party.  This license shall include, without limitation, the irrevocable right to reproduce, prepare derivative works, combine with other works, alter, translate, distribute copies, display, perform, license the Materials, and all rights therein, in the name of Quill.com or its designees throughout the universe in perpetuity in any and all media now or hereafter known, and shall also permit Quill.com and its designees to use portions of the Materials you submit, rerecord or modify any audio tracks or visual images you provide, rewrite any Materials you submit, and/or incorporate other materials, either created by Quill.com and its designees or licensed from third parties, with the Materials you submit.  Any such works shall be deemed Materials owned by Quill.com and shall not be subject to your approval or payment by Quill.com of any compensation to you.  We shall have the right, but not the obligation, to use your name, photograph, likeness, voice, performance, biography and other information about you in connection with the Materials you submit.  You also agree that we are free to use any of the Materials or any comments, information or ideas contained in any content or communication you submit to us or the Site, without notice, compensation or acknowledgement to you, for any purpose whatsoever, including but not limited to advertising and marketing, modifying the Site and developing products and services. 
(b) Quill.com shall have the exclusive option to purchase from you and acquire all right, title and interest, including, without limitation, any copyrights and other intellectual property law in and to the Materials you submit, which rights shall include, without limitation, the irrevocable right to reproduce, prepare derivative works, combine with other works, alter, translate, distribute copies, display, perform, license and apply for copyright registration for any or all of the Materials, and all rights therein, in the name of Quill.com, or its designees throughout the universe in perpetuity in any and all media now or hereafter known.  The option shall be exercisable by us from the date you submit the Materials until one year from that date.  If we exercise the option, you agree to accept payment in the amount of $1,000 USD, and you agree to execute, acknowledge and deliver such other instruments consistent with an assignment of the intellectual property as may be reasonably necessary to carry out or effectuate the purposes or intent of the assignment of the Materials.

4. Content on Site. 
All materials on the Site, including, without limitation, names, logos, trademarks, graphics, photographs, illustrations, and software and other elements making up the Site (collectively, “Content”) are protected by copyrights, trademarks or other intellectual property rights owned and controlled by us or by other parties that have otherwise provided their material to us.  You may not delete, distort, or otherwise modify the Content.  Any unauthorized attempt to modify any Content, to defeat or circumvent our security features, or utilize the Site or any part of the Content for any purpose other than its intended one is strictly prohibited. 


5. Conduct of Users.  
You are responsible and liable for your activities on the Site.  Below are some, though not all, violations that may result in the termination of your access to the Site.  You agree not to do any of the following actions while using the Site:


· harass, stalk, threaten, embarrass or cause distress or discomfort upon another participant, user, or other individual or entity;

· intentionally or unintentionally violate any applicable local, state, national or international law, including but not limited to any regulations having the force of law while using or accessing the Site or in connection with your use of the Site, in any manner;
· invade the privacy or violate any personal or proprietary right (including intellectual property rights) of any person or entity; or
· infringe the intellectual property rights or similar rights, including but not limited to copyrights and trademarks, of any person or entity. 

6. Children Under 13. 

The Site does not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 13, or knowingly allow such persons to post to the Site.  If you are under 13, please do not attempt to post or send any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, or email address.  If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information as quickly as possible.
